PRE – READING  ACTIVITIES:

1.     Look  at  these  paragraphs.  They  are  parts  of  a  story, but  they  are  in  the  wrong  order.  First look  quickly  through  the   paragraphs.

А  She protested against the arrests of  Valentyn Moroz and Nina Strokata, she published a journal "Український Вісник" and was sentenced to 6 years imprisonment and 3 years internal exile, along with Stefania Shabatura and Nadia Svitlychna, for publishing an article on soviet propaganda.


В Iryna Kalynets was a great and fearless fighter for human and democratic rights - one of a generation that risked their lives for the right to think independently, defend the Ukrainian language, and tell the truth about the abuses of the Soviet regime.
May her memory be eternal!


С  After returning to Lviv in 1981, she became a leading member of the civil organisations 'Rukh' and 'Memorial' and continued to write in support of Ukrainian independence and Ukraine's historical and cultural identity. She was elected a deputy to the first Parliament of independent Ukraine and continued to write until her illness.


D  Iryna Kalynets, poet, cultural activist and one of the leading dissidents of the 1970s,
died  after a long illness at the age of 72. After graduating in philology from university in Lviv, she lectured on Ukrainian language and literature and  became involved in the group of dissidents known as the 'shistdesyatnyky' , who wrote and spoke out about abuses of human rights.

The Ballad of the Guelder-Rose Twig
Once a boy brought home a guelder-rose twig.
And he whittled a flute, so that, as in a fable,
he could hear the words of the poor little orphan.
And an unknown melody flowed,
without words, without tears,
yet sad as the song of a seagull in the grip of misfortune.
Surely it’s not for naught a legend has it
that a girl’s heart
has flowed into the clusters of red.
And through the swamps, the labyrinthine ways,
through the jungles of human derision,
he set out to seek
the guelder-rose,
the one, the only one in the world.
And ’neath that guelder-rose,
beneath that one and only,
girls and maidens,
like a flood of dreams.
And garlanded, each one,
be it with the cluster of red,
or with a leaf.
And each one knows the eternal fable
about the edge of loneliness and the flute’s lament.

WHILE – READING ACTIVITIES:

Ihor Kalynets was born in Khodoriv, the son of an agronomist. His parents upheld Ukrainian cultural traditions. As a child, Kalynets read banned literature in the Ukrainian language, and watched the mass deportations of the .lUkrainians by the communists. He graduated from Lviv University in 1961. He began writing in the 1950s, and his first book of poetry was published in 1966. Because of censorship, the rest of his works were published in the west in the Ukrainian language.
One of the main themes of Kalyntes' poetry is cultural glorification. Much of his writing uses a vocabulary full of cultural allusions. His work reflects his pride in Ukrainian culture and the country's ancient pagan and early Christian heritage. In Kupalo's Fire (1966), Kalynets connects the country's folklore and ancient traditions to modern, Soviet life. Most of his works do not contain glaring political criticisms, rather unexpressed denunciation. He drew strong influence from Bohdan Ihor Antonych, and dedicated one of his poems to him. He also dedicated poems to various Ukrainian cultural icons, includingTaras Shevchenko, filmmaker Alexander Dovzhenko, and composer Stanislav Liudkevych among others. He refused to dedicate any poems to the Soviet leaders, breaking from the custom which was typical among poets .
As a "Ukrainian bourgeois nationalist", opposed to the policies of russification and general Soviet lawlessness, he was sentenced to nine years in a labour camp and exile.  His wife, Iryna, was arrested in January 1972. Kalynets refused to cooperate with the KGB and began behaving in a defiant manner.
In March 1971, the 24th Congress of the Communist Party of Ukraine denounced Kalynets' poetry as "reprehensible", made worse by the fact that he allowed his work to be published in the West. He was then indicted on the grounds that he "issues a veiled appeal to struggle against the Soviet government", "calls for a revival of the Uniate Church", "covertly presents the idea that the Ukrainian people is oppressed by the Soviet government", and "articulates a nationalist ideology, as well as nostalgia for  the past and for an independent state". On 11 August 1972, he was arrested, and on 15 November 1972, he was convicted anti-Soviet activities by a closed court and sentenced to six years in labour camps and three years in exile. He served out his sentences in the Perm political labour camps, first at No. 35 at Vsechsvyatskaya, but he was then moved to No. 36 in the village of Kutchino, Perm Region. While in prison, he took part in the resistance movement. He was involved with hunger strikes, the writing of appeals and the writing of chronicles of the two camps.
He was married to poet and fellow ,  Iryna Kalynets (died 31 July 2012, aged 72) who also actively opposed the suppression of the Uniate Church and was a professor of Ukrainian language and literature at the Polytechnical Institute of Lviv. She was sentenced to six years at hard labor.

Khodoriv  is a town  in  Lviv  Region  in  western Ukraine. It has a population of 10,080  inhabitants.
The town was first mentioned in 1394. In many historic documents it is referred to as Khodoriv-stav.. It is connected with a male name Fedir and the location of the town above a big lake. In the 15th century, Khodoriv was granted town status and a coat of arms (A coat of arms is a unique heraldic design) .
Khodoriv was one of the major industrial centres in Zhydachiv  District  and Lviv Region, with more than 10 manufacturing and other plants including the Sugar Plant and the Plant of Manufacturing Poligraph Machines. Within the town, there are three secondary education schools and а college. The town also has some monuments of architecture. In addition,  a new church , designed by Oleksandr Matviiv is being built nowadays.  Khodoriv has always been a big railroad  station  in the region.

Blessed Tarsykiya Matskiv (UkrainianТарсикія Мацьків; 23 March 1919 - 17 July 1944) was a Ukrainian Greek Catholic nun and martyr.
The Servant of God Sr Tarsykia Matskiv was born on  March,23 1919 in the village of Khodoriv, Lviv District. On May,3  1938 she entered the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate. After professing her first vows on 5 November 1940, she worked in her convent. Even prior to the Bolshevik arrival in Lviv, Sr Tarsykia made a private oath to her spiritual director, Fr Volodymyr Kovalyk O.S.B.M., that she would sacrifice her life for the conversion of Russia and for the good of the Catholic Church. The Bolsheviks were determined to destroy the monastery. On the morning of 17 July 1944 at 8 a.m., a Russian soldier rang the convent door. When Sr Taryskia answered the door she was shot without warning and died.  It was later said that she was shot simply "because she was a nun".
She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on June 27, 2001

Catholics were not immune from the violence of World War II. One courageous example of this was Blessed Tarsykia Matskiv, a Ukrainian sister who was shot dead by a Soviet soldier simply because of her faith.
She was  the oldest of four children. Her faith was strong from an early age; she was often  in church  and loved to pray.
At the age 19, despite her mother’s wishes, Olha joined the Congregation of the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate. She assumed her religious name of Tarsykia and in 1940 pronounced her first vows.
In 1944, the Soviet Union attacked the city where Sister Tarsykia was serving her mission. The bombardment drove her and her fellow sisters to hide in the basement of their novitiate.
Sister Tarsykia’s death came just a day after the Soviet attack began. The hidden sisters, waiting for a priest to arrive to celebrate a liturgy, heard their gate bell ring; Sister Tarsykia went out to greet who she thought was the priest. Instead it was a Soviet soldier, who shot and killed Sister Tarsykia. Her remains eventually were returned to her hometown in 2007.
